Tonight we finally had a chance to have Dr. Lai-xi Wang present at our seminar after several time conflicts! Dr. Wang's research interests include bioorganic chemistry, synthetic carbohydrate chemistry, immunology etc. Coming to our GBM, Dr. Wang directed our attention to glycoproteins, glycomics, and their application in various fields such as material science and bio-engineering. Glycoproteins also play a key role in cell-cell communication and virus vs host interaction. One example is the ability of HIV to bind and fuse with immune T cells. Besides his research focus, Dr. Wang mentioned how he got ideas for his project after watching a movie as well as "how to pursue meaningful research".
In addition to Dr. Wang's presentation, we briefly went over three upcoming events: Maryland Day (04/28), Tarbiyah Academy science demo (04/29), and Officer Elections and Party (05/02). For more details about time and activities, please visit this link (Links to an external site.). Maryland Day and Tarbiyah Academy will be excellent volunteer opportunities that you all can have fun and earn points to be qualified for an officer position, so hurry up!
Last but not least, our GBM will be in CHM 1402 at 6:30 - 7:30pm as usual. Comejoin us and relax before the finals draw near!
