It was great to meet the folks who were able to make it to our kick-off GBM yesterday! We had ice breakers, introduced what the ASBMB UMD Student Affiliates Chapter was all about, and topped things off with a make-your-own-ice-cream social. We provided members with kosher salt, ice used for chemistry labs (don't worry, we didn't consume them), big ziploc bags, milk, and of course, toppings. Milk was poured into one bag and placed in another bag filled with ice so that the level of the ice was higher than that of milk, then salt was added onto ice to lower its freezing point. This is similar to how we add salt to icy road to melt the ice. As ice melts, it creates a much colder mixture to freeze the milk. One warning though: we should have worn gloves when handling the bags!
